It may be that over a billion people have been deceived

by these false prophets past and present.

Who are they?

Roman Catholic Popes,

Joseph Smith (Mormonism)

Jehovah's Witnesses Leaders,

Ellen G. White (Seventh Day Adventism).

I will not be dealing with the less influential ones.

When one pope's statements on MAJOR issues contradict other earlier pope's statements, this is every bit as serious as a direct false "prophecy"  -- considering that these Popes claim to be speaking for GOD and telling people authoritatively about their relationship to God.   Here are examples:

   * Pope Eugenius (1431-1477) condemned Joan of Arc to be burned alive as a witch
but another pope, Benedict the XV declared her a saint in 1919

   * Pope Paul V 1605-1621 and Urban VIII 1628-44 BOTH condemned Galileo as a
heretick for beliving the Sun is the center of our solar system...not the earth

   * Pope Innocent III condemned Bible reading in the common language.

   * Nicolas V endorsed slavery of African people and declared war on them

   * MANY popes endorsed the killing, torturing and persecuting of hereticks (Inquisitions)

   * Around 1415 AD THREE different men all claimed to be the one true Pope for the RC Church
       at the same time.

   * Pope Victor III was poisoned in 1087 AD by a chalice he CONSECRATED by his papal
power (by which he allegedly turned it into the blood of Christ). He died.

   * Note "The Church's view of the Muslims. 'The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge
the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and
together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day' " (Catechism of the Catholic
, 1994, p.223).  This OFFICIAL doctrine ignores the fact that the Muslim "Allah"  had no son.  How can
this be true when Jesus as SAVIOR is denied by Muslims? Jews who deny Christ are not considered to be saved.   ???

(This list below taken from thetruthaboutcatholics.blogspot.com)

1) Pope Victor 192 A.D. first approved of Montanism (Montanists baptized in Jesus' name and believed in the spiritual gifts), and then later condemned it.

2) Marcellinus 296-303 A.D. was an idolater. He entered into the temple of Vesta, and offered incense to the goddess.

3) Liberius in 358 A.D. consented to the condemnation of Athanasius, and made a profession of Arianism, that he might be recalled from his exile and reinstated in his see.

4) Honorius 625 A.D. adhered to Monothelitism (the theological doctrine that Christ had only one will even though he had two natures - human and divine; he was condemned as heretical in the Third Council of Constantinople).

5) Hadrian II (867-872) declared civil marriages to be valid; Pius VII (1800-23) condemned them.

6) Paschal II (1099-1118) and Eugenius III (1145-53) authorized dueling; Julius II (1509) and Pius IV (1560) forbade it.

7) Sixtus V (1585-90) published an edition of the Bible, and by a bull recommended it to be read; Pius VII condemned the reading of it.

8) Clement XIV (1769-74) abolished the order of the Jesuits, permitted by Paul III, and Pius VII reestablished it.

JOSEPH SMITH (Mormonism)

This is not an exhaustive list, but merely some that are easier to access in order to verify.

1.  Sept. 21, 1823  Pearl of Great Price,  Joseph Smith 2:40-31   Joseph Smith claimed that the angel Moroni told him that the prophecies in Isaiah, Chapter 11 were about to be fulfilled and that the prophecies of Joel, Chapter 2:28-32 were soon to be fulfilled.

2-4  September 1830, Doctrine and Covenants Section 29:10-11,  Joseph Smith prophesied that the "hour is night"  for Christ to return. See also DC 106:4 and 110:16

5.  July, 1831  D & C Section 57:1-3  Independence, Missouri is named as the center place of Zion.

6.  August 13, 1831, DC 62:1-9  Joseph Smith declares in this revelation that God told him that the faithful among you should be preserved and rejoice together in the land of Missouri  (failed),  I the Lord promise the faithful and cannot lie...Behold the kingdom is yours, and behold and lo, I am with the faithful always."  The Mormons were NOT preserved in Missouri, but driven out.

7. Nov. 1931 D & C 7:35-37  "the day speedily cometh; the hour is not yet, but is high at hand, when peace shall be taken from the earth, and the devil shall have power over his dominion.

8. Dec. 25, 1832  D & C 87:1-8 speaks of a war that would shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina (S. Carolina was in the news at the time as already being in rebellion), it was 29 years later when the civil war did occur, and it ended 4 years later.  The prophecy said  war would be poured out on all nations (failed) and it would bring about a "full end of all nations."  (failed)

9.Dec. 27, 1832  DC 88:87  "For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that faileth from off the fig tree."  Not many days?

10-11. Oct. 1833 DC 100:13-15  Zion shall be redeemed although she is chastened for a little season (ref. to Independence Missouri as Zion)  A little season?  See also 101:17-20... same false idea given.

12.  DC 103:1-25  Promised restoration to their land.  (Vs. 24) "And inasmuch as mine enemies come against you to drive you from my goodly land, which I have consecrated to be the land of Zion, even from your own lands after these testimonies, which ye have brought before me against them, ye shall curse them; and whomsoever ye curse, I will curse, and ye shall avenge me of mine enemies.

This is a reference to Zion's Camp - a group of Mormons organized to march to Missouri and rescue the Mormons there...but history records that the effort was a dismal failure.

13.  April 23, 1834 DC 104:1 establishes an EVERLASTING order for the benefit of the church. The united order (a sort of communal system) failed.

14.  A failed prophecy of a temple to be built in Independence Missouri was given by Smith in D&C 84:2-5 and 31 The prophecy was  re-echoed by MANY other LDS leaders in the Journal of Discourses  even up to 1900 (Lorenzo Snow).

15-20. This is specific to 6 people.   Jan. 21:1836  Church History, Vol. 2, pages 380-381 Joseph Smith said:

"The heavens were opened upon us and I beheld the celestial kingdom of God, and the glory thereof...I saw the twelve apostles of the Lamb, who are now upon the earth, who hold the keys of this last ministry, in foreign lands, standing together in a circle... and finally, I saw the twelve in the celestial kingdom of God.

Of the twelve Smith referred to, SIX apostatized...namely  Lyman Johnson (excommunicated), Luke Johnson, William M'Lellin, John Boynton,  William Smith, and Thomas Marsh.

This is a partial list of Smith's false prophecies.  Former Mormon, Dick Baer, wrote a booklet listing 55 false prophecies of Joseph Smith.  While a few on his list could be dismissed, the majority of them STAND.

I wish to acknowledge that Joseph Smith DID write one true prophecy as follows:

"For although a man may have many revelations and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength and sets at naught the counself of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him,"  D & C 3:4

Joseph Smith DID boast in his own strength - that he had done more than even Jesus Christ (D.H.C. 6:408-409).  This boast was made in May of 1844.  In June of 1844 Joseph Smith DID fall (dead), not as a martyr, but in a gun battle in which he killed two and wounded one (Comprehensive History of the Church, pp. 284-285).  He died not as a sheep going to the slaughter, but as a wolf in sheep's clothing.

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES (Watchtower Society)

  • 1897 "Our Lord, the appointed King, is now present, since October 1874," (Studies in the Scriptures, vol. 4, p. 621).
  • 1899 "...the 'battle of the great day of God Almighty' (Revelation 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership, is already commenced," (The Time Is at Hand, 1908 edition, p. 101).
  • 1916 "The Bible chronology herein presented shows that the six great 1000 year days beginning with Adam are ended, and that the great 7th Day, the 1000 years of Christ's Reign, began in 1873," (The Time Is at Hand, forward, p. ii).
  • 1918 "Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews 11, to the condition of human perfection," (Millions Now Living Will Never Die, p. 89).
  • 1922 "The date 1925 is even more distinctly indicated by the Scriptures than 1914," (Watchtower, Sept. 1, 1922, p. 262).
  • 1923 "Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures. As to Noah, the Christian now has much more upon which to base his faith than Noah had upon which to base his faith in a coming deluge," (Watchtower, Apr. 1, 1923, p. 106).
  • 1925 "The year 1925 is here. With great expectation Christians have looked forward to this year. Many have confidently expected that all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during this year. This may be accomplished. It may not be. In his own due time God will accomplish his purposes concerning his people. Christians should not be so deeply concerned about what may transpire this year," (Watchtower, Jan. 1, 1925, p. 3).
  • 1925 "It is to be expected that Satan will try to inject into the minds of the consecrated, the thought that 1925 should see an end to the work," (Watchtower, Sept., 1925, p. 262).
  • 1926 "Some anticipated that the work would end in 1925, but the Lord did not state so. The difficulty was that the friends inflated their imaginations beyond reason; and that when their imaginations burst asunder, they were inclined to throw away everything," (Watchtower, p. 232).
  • 1931 "There was a measure of disappointment on the part of Jehovah's faithful ones on earth concerning the years 1917, 1918, and 1925, which disappointment lasted for a time...and they also learned to quit fixing dates," (Vindication, p. 338).
  • 1941 "Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon," (Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1941, p. 288).
  • 1968 "True, there have been those in times past who predicted an 'end to the world', even announcing a specific date. Yet nothing happened. The 'end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing?.. Missing from such people were God's truths and evidence that he was using and guiding them," (Awake, Oct. 8, 1968).
  • 1968 "Why are you looking forward to 1975?" (Watchtower, Aug. 15, 1968, p. 494).

ELLEN G. WHITE (Seventh Day Adventism)

I hesitated to list this group because the errors are far less significant than with the other groups.  But this group, formerly known as Millerites, BEGAN with several false prophecies of the coming of Christ (1843-1844).  And Ellen G. White had visions, including one of the commandments, with a halo of light around the 4th commandment (the Sabbath commandment).  This has led to many of these folks believing that disobeying this command could lead to condemnation or damnation (especially during the great tribulation period) if we worship (for example) on Sunday.  We reject this vision and idea based on the fact that Jesus said the greatest commandment is (two part) to love God and others, and because of the statements in Romans 14:4-5, 6:14 and Col. 2:16-17.

Jesus warned us to beware of false prophets.  Do not play Russian roulette with your soul!  Come back to the Bible.
